Tuna, the Northeast
coast's pride and joy. The fisherman's dream. The dream starts in May
and becomes a reality at the end of August. The buzz goes up and down
the docks from Montauk to Sheepshead Bay. Reports come in from the six
packs. Stories of 200 pound big eyes, 140 pound yellow fins...rods breaking....reels
blowing up. Tools like flying gaffs and four gaffs needed to haul in one
monster under the darkness of nights cover.
I
look out off the beach far upon the horizon and keep going to the canyons.
The Continental Shelf where the dreams of fishermen are made. I have traveled
many a mile to find the largest yellow fin and best shot of fish over
200 pounds and may still have many a mile before I get that shot. I've
learned from so many in all different scenarios that I've been thrown
into. Nothing is written in stone. I've seen 100 pound tuna come in like
a forty pound striped bass and I've seen them light up a spool down to
the knot. I once saw a tuna make a mad dash straight at the boat and run
into the hull knocking itself out. I've seen marlin 400 pounds and better
grab the bait and 200 pound makos inhaling your catch for a snack. Sailfish
ripping to the surface showing off it's great bill to throw back your
hook in anger...not today.
Every year there
is a different book written in the Canyon. We have a great tuna season
ahead of us. Best scenario I've seen in a long time coming. You will see
many yellow fin over a 100 pounds this year and a good bunch of albacore
to boot. Plus all the surprises that come up each season.
