Fishing Pier
Myrtle Beach, SC

Pier fishing in the South is unlike anything that we do here in the North. It is an art down South and they catch some pretty larg fish at the end of the dock. As for convenience, there is a tackle store with grade tripple AAA rentals, no Mickey Mouse rods and reels and all the bait you could need. There is also a small arcade inside, with a restaurant right next door. My kind of place to hang out for a while. The first day that I went to the pier (this became my regular hangout), there was bait everywhere breaking water.

My frozen bait wasn't doing the trick so I was checking out two dudes who were throwing nets and getting all the live mullet they need to fish. One of the guys offered to show me how to use a throw net...so I thought, what the heck...do as the locals do. I dropped $27 bucks, got an 8 foot throwing net and tied 20 extra feet to the rope. Then a kind gentlemen showed me how to throw. I had it down on the third throw and came up with enough mullet to hold me over for the morning. I really enjoyed throwing the net and catching my own bait...I highly recommend it.

About an hour later some 13" mullet came by. All the guys on the pier lined up and waited to throw at the same time, so that they would all have an equal shot without have one spook them and the rest come up empty. I got about six on my first throw, the guy next to me couldn't even pick up his net. I pulled mine in and ran over and we hauled about 35 pounds of large mullet up over the edge. They're good eating fish and the best bait for king mackerel and any other monster roaming around. As for my fishing, I was missing my run offs.

There were tons of fathers and mother with their kids on the pier. The kids hitting their parents up for quarters for the arcade and the parents hanging out relaxing. Hey, I can deal with this for a few days. Looking down the pier, I heard some comotion. My son ran down to check it out. They were bringing up a 23 pound, four foot, king mackerel...cool, very cool. Not shabby for pier fishing . Just then the spanish mackerel started buzz sawing threw the water. The sharpies took off their bottom rigs, put on a live mullet and tossed it's sorry butt out for dinner. A bunch came up and then the summer flounder starting showing up. Not bad for a morning bite.

Fishing on the pier brought back the fun of fishing without all the competition for who's top dog. Fishing is not just for those making small fortunes. After you have your gear, 10 dollars and some lunch and your good to go. Beer is extra. As for the kids, it's the place to start them. I met some fishermen who shared their time to show me the ropes...and to have a few laughs. There are always a few secrets that every fisherman has. Just keep your eyes open and observe what they're doing and you'll learn. A little after noon, we went back for a swim in the pool, then a little dinner and then the rollercoaster. You see everybody in the family gets what they want.
