A Father wrote to me recently asking about piers in Long Island to fish from with his two children. At first I thought that I didn't really want to deal with it...but then I remembered that fishing off the piers was how I got started, and it got me through those young years (no wings on this back!). My first snappers, weakfish, flounders, blowfish and whatever would hit the line. I used to wake up my younger brother, Mark at 4 AM to go...we'd ride down on our sting ray bikes, stop at the Causeway Bait Store, drop our change and get whatever bait we could afford.

Wantagh Piers

Throw our bikes over the fence and down to Wantagh Piers, right before sunrise. Some days were better than others, but the magic right as the sky would change colors, as the sun was getting closer and closer to rise. You never forget that...it was always the best bite...the Great South Bay showing off her best side.

Jones Beach Piers

Bring a child down to the piers for their first fishing experience. It's everything through their new eyes...a great gift that lasts forever. Bring alot of food and good junk food and have some fun. Mom , daughter, father, son...neighbors and next door kid who sits around too much. You old cranky fishermen give the gift to someone new. These are just some of the piers on Long Island. More to come...much more.

Greenport Fishing Dock (recommended by Carlos D.)

Located at the foot of third street behind the old railroad station in the village of Greenport, NY. which is about 25 miles east of Riverhead, NY. On the North Fork of Long Island. It was originally used to store railroad cars quite a few years, ago but now it is a public dock for a few commercial fishing boats and a charter boat the Peconic Star II. My family has lived in greenport for a few generations and this dock has been a favorite place to drop a line to catch just about any fish that comes into the waters between Greenport and Shelter Island. I have seen people catch blackfish, bluefish, cocktail blue's, snapper's are a favorite we also have a snapper fishing contest each year. On occasion people have caught weakfish, flounder and porgy's. On a rarer occasion my son caught a Spanish mackerel and I am sure I did not name all the possibilities but you get the idea. Oh yes I did forget that at a certain time of year alot of squid can be had.
