DAY 2Dave's Long Range Trip on the Excel

After a great breakfast of eggs benedict, the Captain came down and gave a thorough seminar on the fishing that we were going to experience. He brought down 4 rod set ups for each scenario and went through the tackle piece by piece. He gave us his own personal tips on the do's and don'ts. Later we had lunch served to us at our tables. We are going to the Alijos Rocks.

The gear to bring to these trips are medium gear for the eight day trips. Line set up from 40 - 50 lbs. seems to be the majority rule around here. We will probably start off with some dorado, remember we are fishing off of Mexico where dorado run up to 60 lbs. I can't wait to get a shot at a nice one. Well, time to take a siesta...I'm not going anywhere!

Right before I went to take a nap, the engines came to a dead halt, the boat had swerved around and we were slamming dorado left and right.. Lines screaming, rods bent over to the max, 20 pounders flying over left and right. As soon as I saw a fleck of color I would cast over with a live sardine and BAM...fish on! Gotta love it!

Over 156 dorado came in that day...with 6 "Tazmanian" wahoo putting smiles across these fishermen's faces. This is only the second day of fishing...four more to go! I caught 10 slammers...yesssssssss!

Now we're continuing to the Alijos Rocks, we'll be there by 4 AM tomorrow morning.
This evening there was another seminar to tell us what to expect at the Rocks. They went over the equipment needed, which hooks, lines, and rods to use. This crew is a very thorough group.

Now for bait, we need to catch some giant squid and keep them alive in one of the bait wells...so at 4 AM there will be a wake up call for everyone to catch bait. No slackers here! I like that. The squid of the Mexican coast are nasty little peckers. They will give you a little love bite if not handled properly...if you get my drift. These squid are over 2 feet long!
Well, I can finally get some sleep, I never did get to take that nap!
