DAY 3
Sometime Before Dawn

Dave's Long Range Trip on the Excel

Ahhhh...alone in the galley, everyone is sound asleep. Not this New Yorker, the psycho I am, I'm thinking about the morning to come like Christmas to a kid!

Dollar for dollar, this is by far the best way to experience true deep sea fishing in the warm waters of the Pacific. Once aboard, all is taken care of...all your meals are included in the full fee. The food is top notch, you will not starve on this boat, but you may gain 20 pounds! They even have an espresso machine...yessssss!

I am sorry for not having alot pictures of yesterday's dolphin blitz, but when you are in the midst of a blitz and you're seeing six dolphin at a time soaring through the air...and one of them is yours, your heart rushes, your fishing disease takes over and you are done for! Sorry, only a true fisherman would understand...and the rest of you land lovers can #@$&* me!

DAY 3
Later that Day

What an incredible day of frustration, joy, anger and laughter. We started at 4 AM catching squid...EVERYONE! We caught about 40 keepers, keeping them alive in the live well. We sent out our live anchovies and caught one tuna here and one there...nothing to write home about.

You could see jutting rocks off to the right, in the middle of the flourescent blue Pacific. What an incredible sight! Well, the Captain decided to switch things up...he sent up the kites and sent out some of our live bait. As we looked on in amazement, those tuna slammed the bait with a vengence. Anyone on a kite got hooked immediately...try 30 for 30 kite flights.

We caught 65 yellow fins in the 70 to 90 lb. range and 6 wahoos for icing! Exhaustion was seen on everyone's face. They dragged their little tails in for dinner and almost crashed out right there in their plates! Yours truly was asleep with my eyes open...what a motley crew. Well, the Captain said, "Tonight boys, we need some more squid, so eat up your dinner and get busy catching some bait." The looks going around made me laugh..."What, are you kidding?!"

So, out we went. Now let me tell you, what went down is not the norm. These squid were up to 10 lbs...yes that's right...and they were all over the place! The squid were taking drag out of the reels...ink was flying all over eveyone...water shooting 20 feet in all directions...and everyone was screaming for the gaff or a net to pull in them in.

I was in tears, laughing my butt off in this odessy. We were pulling in 100 pounds per minute...filling over 20 milk crates which were stacked up on the deck. Then we filled the live wells. I've never seen anything like this in my 20 years of fishing the ocean. Everyone had a great time...sort of funny, how one of the best parts of a trip could be catching the bait...go figure! Trust me, jokes were flying around about squid, for days to come! Everyone walked straight to the showers, bagged their clothes...and sweet mother slumber.
