DAY 6Dave's Long Range Trip on the Excel

We've come to Uncle Sam's Banks, where there are medium yellow fin by the tonage. No shortage here on this day of fishing. Just at sunrise we came into the banks...off in the distance I could see a trawler working. The Excel came to a halt and started tossing sardines by the net full into the water.

Before you could blink the yellow fin were all over the place diving and darting...grabbing all of the bait that had been thrown in. All you had to do was put a live sardine on your line and drop it in the blitz....everyone was on. These speedsters were tearing off line...what a sight. The east coast version of a bluefish blitz! I lost count of the fish after a while. We did this for at least four stops...and within 3 hours, 186 yellow fins, weighing up to 40 lbs. came over the rail. Not shabby, if you ask me.

It was our last day of fishing and we were quickly running out of time...soon we would have to start heading back. The Captain made a call for trolling up some wahoo...and what a good call it was. First team got up with five lines going. Ten minutes later three rods were screaming for mercy. The boat came to a hault and the fights were on. Bombers being cast out by others and the rest live lining some bait out. "Fish on" here and "fish on" there...what a day! These wahoo's put up a mother of a fight. Yours truly landed a brute close to 70 lbs. What a howl.

Larry the tuna killer hooked on a nice bull dolphin...a real chubby that took flight at least 5 times. Well, this went on til the last minute. Before all was said and done, 1 overweight grouper, 186 yellow fin, 23 wahoo and 7 dorado (for the cherry on top!) had been caught on that fall afternoon. What a day, this fisherman will never forget! We were all pretty tired and went in for a siesta.
