Dave's Long Range Trip on the Excel



How do you finish such a complete fishing trip...filling every expectation this fisherman had. On the ride home to San Diego we passed many small Mexican islands along the way. In the afternoon I saw at least a hundred dophin jumping a playing among themselves. A time for time out...sleeping, eating, playing cards and talking to new friends that were made on the trip.


Thanks to Bill Poole and the great crew, Captain Patrick Cavanaugh, the mates, Chris Niedzinski, Dave Burnside, Charlie Casper, Mohawk (better known as Mo), David Nimmer, and John Hughes...and of course the cook, Ed LaCombe. Guys, you know how to make a perfect fishing trip...showing all of the ins and outs, the gear and how to use it.


Some of the fellow anglers on this trip and their fish count included...John Carlson with some 80+ tuna and one 50 lb. wahoo...Scott Reeves with an 80 lb. tuna, a 60 lb. wahoo and a 70+ tuna...Steffen Hartmann with a 100 lb. tuna...Cameron Park with a 70 lb. tuna...Hiroaki Aoki with an 80 lb. tuna...Edward Horton with a 76 lb. tuna and two 20+ yellow tail...


Geno Vent with 2 tuna over 80 lbs and many wahoo...Mark Long with 10 tuna up to 78 lbs. and 6 wahoo up to 50 lbs...Randy Buck with 3 tuna, 50-60 lbs. and 3 wahoo, 30-40 lbs...Joe Clemish with 5 large tuna 70 -95 lbs., 10 football yellow fin to 20 lbs., 3 dorado to 20 lbs. and one 45 lb. wahoo...Dan & Nancy Jo Shubin with 10 tuna 50 lbs. and up, five 15 lb. dorado and 5 wahoo up to 40 lbs...


John Herman with a 25 lb. yellow tail and an 80 lb. yellow fin tuna...Don Herman with one 35 lb. yellow tail, 3 yellow fin up to 65 lbs., a 37 lb. wahoo, and a 19 lb. dorado....Steve Herman 10 yellow fin up to 90 lbs., 13 dorado up to 30 lbs. and 4 wahoo up to 60 lbs...Larry Herman with yellow tail up to 85 lbs., dorado up to 32 lbs., yellow tail up to 25 lbs. and wahoo up to 50 lbs.
