John Hooper, the owner of the Lighthouse View Motel met us on our arrival, after a long, long ride. He offered to take us out on his boat and I was alittle apprehensive about going due to my road rash fatigue. But when is comes to fishing exhaustion seems to disappear, I'm sure that you know what I mean! And within minutes we found ourselves on our way.
John has a beautiful boat, which he built himself and customized to the sea's around his area. We drove right onto the beach and headed for the point. We came to a small cove and backed the boat in for a trip and a half of fishing. The birds were having a hay day right off of the beach and we headed out to greet them with hungry fishing hearts.
The bass were rolling and boiling all around the boat. We cast out some over sized fluorescent green rattle traps and it was a joke...BAM! I was on...BAM! John was on...and Jim (my photographer for this trip) was dumb founded! We pulled in a few nice cows...and Jim got zero. The birds were gone and we were on the chase again.
We saw the birds going berserk. John is a pro, he had us on fish like there was no tomorrow and we were slamming those babies. Jim finally got the right color down and soon he was on a nice cow using his ultra light gear, with a grin from ear to ear...you gotta love it! We were all laughing and having a blast. This is as good as fishing gets!
Well, within an hour we had caught our limit and had thrown a ton back. I couldn't tell you how that makes your hear smile and the road trip to do this story was beyond worth it. The sun was almost gone and we had to head back, el pronto.
On the way back we saw some huge boils in the water, straight in front of us. John made an ace in the hole cast right over a boil...two cranks and he was on a very, very nice fish. Twenty minutes later we had a beautiful 40 pound red drum in the boat. Now guys, it doesn't get better than that! John, I will never forget that first evening and I want to thank you again for a great experience. By the by, John is the man for tips...he was born and raised in Hatteras. A hardcore fisherman who knows his area. His establishment is top notch and is so fitting with the environment.
