Karl Schuman Polaris Supreme Trip - February

This is the year, I said to myself...OK Karl you made reservations, phone calls and long nights online. I was ready...so I thought. A 16 day trip on the Polaris Supreme out of San Diego, California. Fishing for monster yellowfin tuna and wahoo. Tommy Rothery is regarded as one of the most skilled captains in the San Diego fleet along with Captain Vic Moore with their commercial fishing experience what a team!

First stop Fishermans Landing the ultimate tackle store! WOW was I in heaven. Oh and don't forget your visa! Now onto the boat...This is not just a fishing boat, but a world-class luxury long range fishing vessel. The Supreme is 90' long with a 25' beam, state of the art electronics, and computer on the bridge! Full carpeting throughout, 12 air-conditioned staterooms and hey Dave, even an espresso machine! All rooms have a sink with hot & cold water; cedar lined closets and plenty of storage. I was lucky to get one to myself.

Before we got underway the boat stopped at the bait dock to load up then we were out to sea...Finally! First thing Tommy announced was that we were going straight to Clarion Island so we had 3 days of seminars to get ready for some big fish. The classes were on safety, safety, safety, skiff fishing, fishing rigs, hooks, line, kite fishing, wahoo bombs, chunk, live bait, etc.

On this limited load 16-day trip there were 15 anglers, 6 crew plus Tommy and Vic. The guy's I met on this trip were all top-notch fishermen. Thanks for welcoming this New York fisherman to the West Coast. LET THE FISHING BEGIN! The first day fishing blew my mind. The fishing was great! My first fish was an 80 lb. wahoo. My first wahoo ever...WOW.

Now onto my first skiff rotation with my fishing partner Tom, we slow trolled salami mackerel on a 9/0 mustad 7691 hook. BAM I was hit! Kevin the skiff captain did an outstanding job handling the skiff as I brought a 150 plus pound yellowfin to the gaff...what a day! The fishing was so good! We spent the next 6 days there. Then we went to Roca Partida where there was even more great fishing for yellowfin and wahoo! My biggest tuna of the trip was caught here.

One more stop...San Benedicto. To our surprise no sharks and wahoo, wahoo, wahoo. Wide open bite all day! The trip was heading to a close where we headed to Cabo San Lucas and we said good-bye...till next year. Trip totals for 8 1/2 days fishing were 323 fish and excellent weather.
