Montauk - Labor Day Weekend

September 5 - 7, 1998

It was a nut house, but the weather was gorgeous for land lubbers. As for the sea, someone should talk to Mother Nature and tell her that the hurricanes are gone. She has been throwing the roll on and rip tides ran across the beaches in Montauk. This made surfcasting a bit rough...although I did manage to catch a beautiful 7 lb. weakfish for my work on Saturday night (on the full moon). Bass to 24 pounds were picked up during the weekend on the surf. The real sharpies haven't started working the surf yet.

I was at the Lighthouse on Sunday and the surf was alive and kicking...you could see the bird working the whole area. Bonita were tearing up the water straight off the point. The blues were having lunch to my right and the bass were chowing on baby bunker to my left...and, of course, my rods were in the car! Go figure!

Johnny's Bait and Tackle predicts good fall fishing coming up. Right now with the fish at the point and it should be a slamming fall...we're talking bass to 50 lbs. Should they come in for fall lunch, it will be quite a show. So get your surf gear in order.

Giant tuna's came in to the count of 884 lbs. (see 9/4/98 Special Report) thank you very much. But unfortunately, the season is closed now, thanks to the wonderful quota system that comes from the "Toys R Us" committees.

As for the boats, the six packs have been hitting the cream of the crop on stripers. Bass to over 50 lbs. are being caught and 30 pounders are no big deal. Sea bass to 5 lbs. have been caught by Block Island. And for you cod lovers (like yours truly), the boats are pulling them in at their secret cod spot.

The party boats have all switched to jigging and eeling at night and are having a ball. The fluke are packing their bags to leave and I think that the captains have seen enough fluke and are please to switch over. This fluke season in Montauk will go down as one of the hottest years.

Well, Labor Day has come and gone, now it's part 2, time to get serious. It's hot surf fishing time...with big tuna, blues and killer bass...and no traffic! Yesssss!

Book now for all your tuna trips. They fill quickly from Montauk to Staten Island.

Sheepshead Bay...Ambrose...boys and girls...big fat fluke are still there. So go get them...it won't last forever. Bottom fishing for sea bass is kicking. Blues have been slamming with albies and bonita mixed in.

The Sound...killer blues to 16 lbs. and the bass are begging to come out of there summer dulldrums.

Orient Point has been slamming big cows on surf and on the six packs.

Point Lookout, Freeport and Captree have all be doing fine on the fluke still....and have been kicking the blues as well.

Sorry, want some bad news...look somewhere else...these are the facts...go and enjoy! Dave
