Surfcasting - Montauk

September 21, 1998

Montauk had the best bite of the year, this past week. Bass in the 20's range were in solid...stupid fishing! You could have used an alley cat for a plug when the blues were making their mark. Then there was the invasion of the bonitas, caught on small castmasters and small (I repeat SMALL) tins. Everything heats up at the end of September and explodes in October. I've been on the road taking care of a bunch of stories...I need to get a clone or two to help cover all the areas!

So on Sunday night I couldn't take it anymore, I shot down to Montauk and went straight to Johnny's Bait and Tackle. I walked in and saw the owner's face...he looked at me in that funny way that told me I had missed it. Welcome to fishing! I mumbled under my breath like Popeye...and asked the tourist question, "but, but" well, what the heck, I'm going to the lighthouse and put my time in.

When I got there I had no expectations, let God make the day as he sees fit. I bought some eels, some new rigs and headed on down. When I got there, everyone was out for the last days of summer. There were three boys attempting to surfcast with their mothers by their sides. It was a blast to watch them try to cast. Anybody walking behind them was risking a body piercing! I had to help them out and gave them a few pointers.

Climbed up the rocks and looked around at all the boats fishing the rips. There was not much being caught, until I ran into these four city boys fishing with bunker. They were the only ones connecting with fish. They caught a total of six keepers in the 20's throwing back two. Not to shabby, if I say so myself. All in all, I got my stroy helping out fellow fishermen by climbing down the rocks to help gaff a couple of these stripers.

I'm not going to say the weather was great, the skies were as blue as an angel's eyes and the surfcasters were happy just to be fishing and not working. No I won't say that...but it's true!
