I had one of those perfect days of fishing yesterday. It was a pleasure to have all the conditions just right. The wind was light, I mean nonexistent...the ocean was laying calm with a light roll...the temperature was 54 degrees...the fall sun was toasty...and, most importantly, the blackfish were cooperating. Well, for some reason beyond me, there was no crowd. Except for 8 lucky fishermen on this day, we had cod, ling and some jumbo blackfish. Walter even got into the action. The Captain nailed an 11 pound blackfish with a grin from ear to ear. I had a blackfish that resembled a small dog if you get my drift. Everybody had big black fish out at 17.

We could manuever anywhere on the boat without a problem to fish the whole spot inside out. Not an unhappy face on this boat. In fact one young man who thought he was going to have a sour grapes day ended up with two full buckets of jumbo blacks. It was a consistent bite all day. I had my spectrum line on this time, so when I connected, I CONNECTED! When fishing 17 use no less than 30 lb. leader. I prefer 40 lb. leader. When those blacks go running for holes under the rocks there's alot of chafing going on down there and 20 lb. test becomes sewing thread on a rock.

When using spider wire of any kind do not tie directly on...put at least six feet of leader line on and pound test to match the conditions and species of fish you are going for.
I always prefer fluoro carbon leaders for all fish except blackfish, because it could get coastly quick. You lose lots of rigs blackfishing, trust me. If you're not losing rigs, you are not near enough to the structure to catch the blackies where they live. When I see people getting hung up near me I know Mr. Blackfish is not far behind.

A blackfish hit is not a little jitter on your line...those are begauls. Teething blackfish have some weight to their hit. When you think you have a blackfish munching away give him some line don't spook him. If you move the bait he will back away from your bait. Then tack up as much slack up and bring that rod to the sky and reel baby, get him off the bottom. No jerking the rod keep the tension all the way up. If you have 20 lb. test and that fish is the pig of your dreams, you lose buddy. But if you have 40 lb. leader and 60 lb. spider wire you have odds are in your favor. If anything the fish may get away but you'll have his lips on the end of your hook. All this is a combination of information from sharpies around me. Always keep an open mind. There are always new thing to learn.
