Brooklyn VI - Sheepshead Bay

Fishing for blues is a Long Island tradition. Those lated night, early morning bluefish trips. In the early 60's I would beg my older brothers to take me along...they'd leave late at night and be back at dawn. My brothers would come back with canvas bags filled to the brim and give the fish away to the neighbors. Sometimes they would be so tired that they'd leave the bags on the front porch and every cat for miles would be there yelping and trying to get into the bag. I remember those days like they were yesterday! Well, guess what, it's still the same just a little less fish because of the quotas.

The Brooklyn VI is one of the fastest boats out of Sheepshead Bay, so you're fishing in no time. We caught blues all night long. I had a slow start but was nailing away at them once I figured out their number. These were not little 3-5 pounders, they were big brutes...8-13 lb. bluefish, what a blast! I still don't get it how people let a bluefish drag them around...they should go tuna fishing with me!

We had all the right bait...bunker and butter fish. Personally, I think that you could have used an alley cat and they would have eaten it! Everybody went home with fish...how could you not?! If someone says that they didn't catch a fish on this trip, they should go to confession, because they're lying! It's bluefishing so bring a sense of humor, don't get so serious.

The mates were running all over the boat, God bless them...they need six arms and a St. Christopher medal to keep their heads on straight. The Captain aced the bluefish spots. The fish were right off the boat maybe 40 feet and on the top, no weights required. I had a good time and caught my limit in no time. So if you need to get the blues out of your system and fill your burlap bags...get your buddies together and go to the Brooklyn and have a blast. Less crowds on the weekday. ENJOY!
