Tuna Blitz on the Viking - Part 1

September10-12, 1999
For the last three years, tuna fishing was slim pickings to say the least. You had to earn your fish. So this three day trip on the Viking was a true surprise.

The three day trip always brings out some familiar faces that I look forward to seeing all year. Carl, Brad, Pete, Big Mike and his wife were all on the boat. I had a feeling about this trip on the drive from New York...and I was right.

Steve and his mates had their hands full on Friday, it was a real Chinese fire drill. I was fishing with fifty pound test and my beat up old St. Croix and my old Daiwa, 70 lbs. flouro-carbon leader and some nice Gamakatsu circle hooks that Al had dropped off for me. The weather was nasty, we're talking blinding, wind-swept rain. Okay, who turned on the faucet?

I won't give up the location, go ask Steve for it and good luck. The tuna went nuts, and we were slamming fish left and right. Yellowfin not giants, but 50 lbs. and better...and all you wanted. There were bluefin in the mix, which were catch and release. But hey, catching 100 plus bluefin on 50 lbs. test is a blast.
