The Last Three Day Tuna Trip of the Year
Viking - Montauk

As for the Viking, Steve and Rich are having a blast from the past. Hopes turn to realities as they see their customers leaving with "I'll see you next season for sure." A new generation of fishermen and fisherwomen trips have changed in attitude. Reasons for going is less for the meat and more for the ultimate rush from watching the reel screaming and wondering if they can handle the fight. It brings me great joy to watch a virgin tuna fisherman bring his first tuna in with his eyes all bugged out, heart racing and stoked for the next rush. Better than any drug because it's a real experience that will be remembered for years to come. The story will probably grow and become more colorful and full of lengthy build ups. But heck, isn't that what life is all about, experiences! Sure beats being a couch potato and knowing all the characters on Star Trek.

Steve had a great crowd on the boat, because that night all hell broke loose, a real Chinese fire drill. It started at 9 PM and didn't slow down until 5 AM. Tuna ranged from 40 lbs. to 70 lbs. John from Ashtaguia, Ohio, about 60 miles East of Cleveland maxed out with three nice yellowfin and lost about 6 fish. First tuna trip in 18 years. He was impressed and will be mailing tuna steaks home. He told me all about his adventures on the Viking and now, he has one to add. Vince Strautmanis from Soho killed them. Vince was on a roll from Las Vegas. I fished with Vince at the end. Kept giving him the depths of the fish and he'd do all the rest. Vince's new name is "Vince the Slammer". Laurie R. from New Hyde Park and daughter Samantha, 13, did an OK job on their first trip. The water was great in helping them out on their first trip. I think we'll see those two again.

Lorraine M. from my hometown of Bellmore maxed out. But of course she is from Bellmore de France, south of the border, her first trip in 6 years. She was stoked. And let us not leave out California Carl from Saint James. He maxed out in a heart beat and released many more. Carl slammed then jigging, what's new? Carl is one lethal fisherman. Knows his gear inside out, and as for the rest of his motley gang, they had a great time.

Beyond the rough ride out, Mother Nature laid the canyon flat, and the boat maxed out. I repeat, maxed out. Steve had the hot tip and used it. Good choice, Steve. And thanks for having me aboard to experience a great time. Next time, sleeping for an hour during the 24 hour marathon would be good.
