Bring Your Child Fishing

March 25, 2000

I think, all in all, I have a better time with my son fishing than anyone else, and I always catch more. There's a secret spot that we have about 2 hours from New York. Hidden up in the country, just down the road a bit. No signs on the road to get to this lake. It's not on the map and you can't get there from here. There is an old bridge with a waterfall from an old mill. Pine trees surround this place and you are the only one fishing there.

Crappie fishing is my son's favourite (also mine). This place is loaded with them in the spring, but since there's no one that fishes it, there's no fishing report to check on but yourself...sort of hit and miss. Well, it's been a cold winter and the water was still not warm enough to get the fish into their sprawning run in the shallows. But fishing is always full of surprises...Michael dropped his micro, green mister twister on a jig head half the size of your thumbnail with 3 feet of line and a weighted float. Yes, I set him up. He's only ten, okay? The float started drifting a bit and stopped dead in it's tracks then sunk two inches below the surface of the water and did not move an inch. My son set that hook like he was fishing for blue fish. It shot off under the bridge. That's no crappies he screamed at me. And I watched as the fish came into site...a 3lbs large mouth bass on 4 lb. test! It was pretty funny watching Michael get it to the shore. His eyes were bugged. We released the trophy bass for another day. The hook this bass was on was a total joke. Michael threw it back on the same spot, and, to my son's luck, down she went again. This time it was a bit larger.

Michael handed the rod over to me, saying "Dad. Don't you lose that fish." Thank god for long spaghetti rods, it looks so impressive. That fish went under the bridge to the other side my son looking at me and thought, this is not a good scenerio at all. That line is at it's max and the hook is made for crappies not this 5 lb. bass. I got him from under the bridge and dragged him to the shore line where Michael refused to grab him. I picked up the bass for a few pictures and then back he went. Our day was made right there and then. For the rest of the day Michael cought over 40 sunnies. The sun was coming down behind the mountains and we headed home, a #10 day by far. Mike is a real joker and wise guy...yeh...my pride and joy! Take your kids fishing it doesn't get any better than that in life.

Love,
Dad

P.S. Here's a picture of my son rainbow form Twin Lake two weeks earlier.
