Ocean Eagle - Sheepshead Bay
April 20, 2000

From Montauk to Sheepshead Bay, the weather has become a royal pain in the butt. The last northeast blow has stirred up the waters and has dropped the water temps. Big time...again.
On a good note, the mackerel trips have been having a ball, filling up coolers left and right. But this, boys and girls, won't last forever. So get on a trip now. In less than a week it may be just a memory. So get real, smell the coffee and do it up.

It's no secret that the stripers are in and in large numbers. From Fire Island to New York and then some. Try to use artificials if you're going for them. Chunking at this time will mean gut hookups, which will kill alot of stripers for no good reason. Especially considering that it's not open season yet, hello.
Blues and weakfish are also out our door steps. Flounders have been good in Jamaica Bay and alright in the Great South Bay. Shinnecock has been an up and down rollercoaster with the weather. Be patient and fish hard, the weather will eventually calm down. This is real Spring weather...we've been spoiled the last few years.
Blackfishing also should drastically improve after the water settles from the last storm. They like to binge right before a storm and get lock jaw right after. Also, a little tip, blackfishing ends May 31st. After May 31st, it's one fish, whoopie!
The Viking is doing a long range cod trip next week. It's a Dave Hot Tip, don't miss the bus on this one. Also Captain Lou's trips have been bailing mackerel. A no brainer. The Explorer in Sheepshead Bay has been trying to find more space to bait the mackerel on...it's that good.
This weekend will be a sloppy one with all the rain. But no reason to stay at home. We're off the full moon and if the winds behave, all will go well.
Hot tip this weekend: mackerel and flounder.
