"Crappies to Go"

May 1, 2000
Artist Lake & "Spot X"

Okay, this isn't too great of a saltwater report, but it's one hell of a freshwater report. Got up at an obscene hour to go fishing with my brother Joe. He had promised me all the crappies I would ever want to see in one day. One spot was Artist Lake, the other spot you guys will have to earn by searching different ponds you pass everyday.

"Spot X", we'll call it, was A. legal, and B. open to the public and C. just me and my brother there all by our lonesome selves. My brother Joe will fish every pond and stream in Long Island, and this one was a doozy.

On a black and green micro jig with no bait, we caught over a 100 crappies...I kid you not! With some bass to boot. There was a smaller pond to this string of ponds where the mama lukes had no wishes for the jigs. They wanted the live killies, period. And we're talking slabs a pound and better.

Now I know you guys read somewhere of crappies to three pounds, give us all a freakin' break, get a life dude, here's a quarter to call someone who believes that one. A three pound crappie is a frisbee with fins and Twin Lakes does not, I repeat, does not have crappies to three pounds. A one pound crappie is a big crappie, Ralphie boy....and we caught a bunch.

Then off to Artist Lake we went. The lake is down so the fish are concentrated to the middle (obviously). "Pickerel City U.S.A." one after the other. The crappies were there, but the pickerel were the boss this day for sure. Hook and rip, don't wait, if you don't have a wire leader you'll go through hooks as fast as you breathe. How many fish did we keep out of the haul? Zero, I repeat, zero, just catch and release for all of these fish. For if we had kept these fish out off these ponds, we'd wipe them out in a single season.

Plus, I wouldn't recommend eating fish out of Artist Lake or most of the lakes in Long Island for health reasons. You'll start losing hair and grow a third arm. Your liver will explode, taking out all the people around you...not a pretty sight. So fish and fish wise, fish long and throw them back for the children coming up behind you.
