"In Search of Jumbo Fluke"

Captain Lou - Freeport
May 18, 2000

Jumped on a half day trip before the winds came in later in the day. The fluke were on the bite, but those dam winds were pushing the boat faster and faster as the morning slipped by. Presentation is the ticket...keep it clean and straight forward...dirty bucktails and old sloppy bait clumped on the hook is not going to shake up those brutes. Squid strips have been a definate plus. Bucktails above your rig has a definate added advantage to your catch ratio. Look I caught four to one fish ratio because of it today. When using a bucktail, white has been the ticket along with a single spearing. Also, shorten up on those strips...12 inches is 8 inches too long...keep the bait small...and be sure to put a split in the tail of your strips for better flutter action. Don't just slop your bait on and think that the fluke are going to commit suicide.

May the doormat force be with you, young flukewalker. Oh, by the way, there's a ton of fluke in the Great South Bay. The morning bite this week is the ticket because fo the tide...no secrets...just the facts. Please check the size of your catch carefully...the DEC is on a war path and will not have a sense of humor when you try to tap dance your way around a story of what size you thought the fish was.
