"Surf Rats"

June 10-11, 2000

Well Guys, it's alot easier to get around on the beach in my new Tonka truck! I hit Democrat, Sore Thumb and Lido all in one day...something that I could never have done without my four-wheel drive and my beach pass. The good news is that the weather this past weekend was hot enough to cook an egg on the roof of your car and the beach was the place to be. A nice cool wind was blowing, keeping away the heat...the blue skies were spiritual food for the heart and soul. Now for the fishing...it has been a slow pick all over. You had to put your work in to get these fish. There was no huge body of fish moving anywhere. Just a bunch of rogues roaming around. My friend Barry and I hit every hole we knew of except for Field 6. Lido had a few schoolie bass and a few weakfish to 10 lbs. and I mean "a few". Translation, a fish here and a fish an hour later. That kind of fishing. Robert Moses had alot of fluke to keep you busy...the silver bullet and a small bucktail on a slow drag and twitch produced fish by the inlet.

As for bass...clams and sandworms on slip sinkers did the job. The fish all were close into shore. Cedar Beach definately had some real nice weakfish to 10 lbs. Not shabby at the height of high tide at the turn was most productive. Sandworms with a cork and an inch from the hook to keep off the bottom. Cedar Beach had alot of weeds, so you have to do a little gardening to get your prize. This weekend the moon should be good for mister bass.

I did loose one monster slob that busted me off with 30 lb. test at the turn of high tide. Caught me off guard I didn't retie my rig from fishing all day from the slow pick. That's what you get when you don't check your gear. There are a few 40 lb. and better slobs roaming around and you don't know when your time has come up. So you must always act as if today is that day. Last year I was fishing Hither Hills playing with schoolies to 14 pounds and having a good time, when suddenly I got slammed. Luckily, I had brand new line, a thirty pound fluorocarbon leader, a top knotch swivel and all my knots were tied sweet and clean. I fought that pup for almost 15 minutes for a nice 35 pounder. Like I said, you never know you never know...it could have been a 50 pounder.

A little note: Don't be pig-headed and single-minded or a one-tooth-wonder. There's a time when lures are the way to go and there are times that those pups want meat and steak sauce. So be a little open minded and be courteous to your fellow fishermen. A foul mouth wannabe on the surf is a real drag dude. Bad karma! Fish get repelled from your bad vibes, so kiss a toad and join the rest of us. Be a fisherman among fishermen.

Second note: I had a four legged visitor. A young deer wondered onto the beach at dusk, passed by all of the parked four-wheel drive vehicles and a few surfcasters and walked directly up to me. We looked eye to eye and then he went running off back to the dunes. Now that's karma...very good karma!
