"Tuna Bomb"

Viking - Montauk

September 14-15, 2000

Well, I'd like to say that all trips are planned, that we know the outcome ahead of time and that the report on a trip is simply ripped from last year's report and pasted up. Every year has a curve ball in fishing. This year it's size...we're dealing with bigger yellowtails not football size peanuts. Throw away last year's rigs...not happening boss man.
This past Thursday and Friday on the Viking fishing out in the Fishtales Canyon was anything but the norm. Let's try water spouts (miniature tornados) at sea. This little guy was maybe 8 feet across, gliding across the ocean, which was as calm as a lamb's breath. Rich put us right next to one of these natural phenomenons. As she collapsed from the clouds above, in the distance there was a real hum dinger doing a number that we'll leave alone.

Back to fishing...the first fish that I had on was on 40 pound test with a 30 pound leader. It was five in the afternoon. She was a beaut of a fight...60 pounds and better. No scale guys, take it with a grain of salt. There wasn't another bite until dusk. Pete, a regular on the Viking tuna trips and one mean tuna jigger nailed a pup about the same weight. There was a fish here and a fish there and then at 11:40 am, BAM, the rods were screaming up in the bow. Carl and friends had their rods singing "God Bless America." Four fish on, two made it into the boat weighing about 70 pounds a piece. The one that Carl lost was a baby Godzilla. I had Bertha, my 50-80 two speed reel, in the bow...along with my baseball, Penn, tuna stick...forget the rollers. Rick the captain said, "Oh Dave" the rod was bent like a pretzel screaming for mercy, then it did an about face straight for the boat. I pulled the hook. Dang! This is how the night went...shot at 7 or 8 fish and then wait...every hour on the hour. The fish were always beneath us the entire trip. But they were being tuna snobs. Harvest full moon...low pressure...you come up with a reason! Over 60 fish were run around the boat, but only 30 or so came aboard. I never went to sleep that whole trip. Beyond chowing on Linda's dinner and home baked muffins.

The canyon is loaded with big tuna. The next week or so they're going to be on the feed bag big time, so don't be surprised to see alot of fish over 100 pounds coming up over the rails. I smell it. This is a word of advice...at night, put the small stuff away...use heavy duty leader line 100 pound and better. Don't be sorry at the gate. Jigging has been the top producer. Pete had a few pigs on, testing his gear to new heights. It was a frustrating trip because of the loss of fish, but this is fishing...welcome to the tuna game.

For you diehard tuna freaks, if you have been hiding out for the last few years, waiting for the real thing...dust off your rods and get out there.

They're Back!
