I was heading south to the Jersey boats, but as fishing goes in the Canyon, you must be very aware of the weather fronts. A front was coming in from the Northeast and it was going to howl like the gate keeper from hell. The Jersey boat was going to leve at 6 PM on Sunday and Capt. Steve's boat in Monatuk was leaving at 3 AM on a two day trip. The winds were supposed to turn around to Northwest at midnight and calm down which would bring the seas down from 14 feet to 3-4 feet. Nw what is the right choice. Hmmmmm, let's think.

Anyway, the Jersey boat cancelled, thank you Jesus...and I headed to Montauk for a trip on the Viking, again. Bluefin season had opened it's tiny little window for four fish (two medium, two small). You must measure them carefully or the DEC will own your royal butt! Steve heard where there were some nice bluefin and before you could say Jiminy Cricket, we were at our spot just before dawn. We put a slick out and I put on some 50 pound fluoro carbon leader, 8 feet in length and a gorilla style circle hook.

Wham bam...thank you...I was on a nice 60 pound bluefin, then another small one and two nice puppies came on board. We 're done, time to head out to the Canyon...and by this time the seas were not misbehaving. Due to the Northeast blow the football game had to have our play changed. The warm water had been flattened out form the 70's to the high 60's. So we had a little longer run west. Steve found some nice 68 degree water with bait...stopped and set the slick. There were more aggressive squid than I have ever seen on the East Coast. So we filled our small live well and picked at the fish all night. With true albacore, big butt yellow fin and a two hundred pound allison. The back of the boat had the better pick on the trip because of direction of the slick line and the wacked behavior of the fish. Plus we only lost a few fish. Steve and his mates were all over the situation and stayed on top. Great trip all in all. The quality of the fish were sweet, real sweet.

Linda made a New Zealand rakc of lamb with mint sauce for dinner, that was outrageous. Linda you really out did yourself.

Thanks Steve and crew for a top knotch trip...it doesn't get any better!
