The Tuna's Last Revenge

Explorer - Sheepshead Bay

October, 2000

I was fishing on the Explorer with Capt. John...on the way out he heard the reports that the fish were hitting in the day time, but that the night fishing was almost nill. Whether it was because of the full moon or the change of water temperature, you choose. That night I thought to myself that the party was over for the year...that night we only caught four fish. It was mind numbing, the seas were glass and the Canyon current was humming. The night was long and the fishermen were losing hope of any catch.

But as the sun came up, John shot to a spot where the tuna were said to produce a little better. We anchored up on the edge of the wall and in 600 feet of water. Finally a fish was on and then another and before you knew it we had four fish on...YESSSS! John said "Dave, come up to the pilot house and check out the fish finder." My eyes bugged out, it was loaded big time from 200 feet and up. I flew down the stairs, dropped my line to 160 feet and was on in a heartbeat. All of a sudden I hear they're taking chunks right on top of the water...so I threw off all the weights and just put on a half bait. Lines were screaming out all over the place...what a blast! Talk about going the distance...John stayed out until three o'clock in the afternoon, practically giving his customers another free trip.

We caught over 40 fish in the daytime and left them biting big time. So this is the skinny...the tuna are still out there big time! So let me make myself perfectly clear...this weekend should be total tuna chow time. So mosey on down and lasso a few tuna, Cowboy. Rock & Roll....Peace Out...Cool Chillin'...
