"Orient Point Atomic Blackfishing"

Prime Time III

November 20, 2000

Okie-dokie little partners... How do I say, being at the right spot at the right time. St. Peter was sailing with us this day. There was a window of weather that I had jumped all over on. I checked up and down the Island for a good story before hand and Orient Point was the best shot with the dropping water temps...the blackfish had to wake up. Barry Deslisle, a long-time fishing partner in crime, was with me.

We got down to the boat early. There was no wind and a chill in the air. Not what the weatherman was whining about, as they always do. Like the end of the world was coming down from hell. It was just a cold front moving at about 2 miles an hour. Get a life you weathermen! (Couldn't make anchorman on CBS...oh no!)

Anyway, a two and a half hour run somewhere between here and there...closer not further.

Every Captain has special blackfish wrecks. Some known, some unknown. They work hard to find these spots and keep them for their customers, so they can produce a day like this. Spots are to be earned, not always given out on a silver platter.

So we got to our destination, Mike double anchored up on the wreck, positioning us right on top of the honey hole. A fish here a fish there. I slid to the front and grabbed my buddy. On my first drop down, the blackfish were all over my bait like a possessed badger. A five pounder. Dropped right back down...A six pounder...A seven pounder...and a five pounder...one after another. It was sick! These fish were on the feed.

Skip Rankin won the pool on this incredible day!

I personally limited out fast. I threw back a slew of fish and to top it off, I bagged a few sea bass.

Barry was hitting and missing one after another...until he got their number. No one left the rail. All of the fishermen were ecstatic. It just doesn't get any better than this. Almost every single customer limited out...maybe two or three had eight fish. Sorry dudes! Caught up, hung up, waited too long and got dragged down to the blackfish dungeons. Even when I got snagged, I would just wait a minute for a blackfish to bite and drag it back out.

Green crabs worked just fine. Hermit crabs, on this bite, would have been a waste of money. I bent a hook straight on a BIGGGGG fish. Great crowd, great fun...what a treat.
I am still stoked over this trip and hope that you guys will get into the action. This will not last forever, trust me. Get into the fire...run, don't walk.

Skip the turkey and get a blackfish oven stuffer.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
