"Crappies by the Ton"

April 20, 2001

While fishing has been metza metz on flounder. I took my son and wife to join Crazy Joe, my brother, to slam some crappies. And slam them we did on fly rods. That's right, I'll admit it...when something works hot and fly fishing for crappies is stupid fishing. My brother Joe showed my son, who has never used a fly rod in his life, the basics in about 10 minutes. No sooner, I turn around to see Michael wacking away at those dang crappies one after another. It was beautiful. Mike turned to me and said "Dad, you have to get me one of these fly rods." I just looked and him and smiled and said "You got it!"

Joe and I caught over 65 crappies easy. Michael caught an easy 35 fish and we release all of them. Robin fished for 20 minutes and caught 10 and was finished.

Crappies is all about finding them and learning their Spring locations. Look for brush and tree limbs in the lakes bank. That is their spawning areas in the Spring. When fishing for crappies, think micro-jigs...the smaller the better...fluorescent green Mister Twisters, tipped with a grub. Depending on the depth, crappies look up, not down. So sitting your bait on the bottom of the lake is going to get you gotz. As Joe has pounded into my head with a hammer...use two to three feet if leader with a float in four to five feet of water, in the shallows. Structure is 95%.

Now here is a little secret that Joe will shoot me over. Black and green Mister Twister micro-jigs, tipped off with a grub or Berkeley crappie powerbait nuggets are a hands down killer for Joe. For me nice juicey white grubs will do. Artist Lake is definately a ticket for you crappie junkies. This will be short lived. Bring waders to get out to your spots. Go have a blast and bring a child...ScreamingReel Dave.
