I had little expectations for this trip. If I only caught a few it would have been OK with me. Heck, I had even cut off all of the tops of my hooks.
Right!
It's time to do a little cod slamming. It was an arm-wrenching, double headers...put your back into it boy...fishing trip. Yeah baby! Scubby Doo....hook me up Scotty.
Capt. Desi did a smoking job. We had a great crowd on board. The first day was your medium cod over easy. Perfect table fair cod...8 lbs. to 11 lbs...perfect fillet size. The weather was calling for rough seas, when the front blew over. Well it came over like a lady finger instead of a blockbuster. Thanks to St. Peter and the rest of the fishing Gods.
The second day Desi decided to do a litle wreck fishing. At the first wreck I donated a few jigs to the net on top of it which is as frustrating as hell. Some nice cod to twenty pounds came up here and there. Our side of the boat was playing the New York Mets while the other side of the boat had every rod bent over...go figure. The angle of the jig going out...is my best hunch on that one. Maybe it was my deodorant!
Capt. Desi looked around...there was not a boat to be seen. So they were able to hit one of the Viking's secret wrecks. If I gave the numbers out, I'd have my arm removed and be beaten with it... I really like having two arms! Our first drift over the wreck was cod heaven. Every rod on that boat was bent over with nice fish in the twenty pound range. Yours truly ripped up the largest fish on the obat in the thirty pound pluss class. We had a slamming time that morning. Many a fish came on over twenty pounds that beautiful Sunday morning. Not an unhappy face on this boat boys and girls. Tommy Gunn and I were looking at each other saying "You film"..."No, I got that last drift"...."No, you film"..."That's your job buddy"..."I quit"..."Wait a minute, lets get that guy over there with the glass eye to film!"
Capt. Desi O'Sullivan and all the mates did a great job in making this trip a memorable one for the books.
I would highly advise in booking your trip on one of these Spring cod trips. Cod without the frost bite and seventeen layers of clothes on. Skins and a couple of good sweaters will do it...remember that the water is still cold. Don't forget the sunglasses and sun block.
Tommy Gunn and yours truly will have an excellent short film on this little adventure, which should wet your whistle.
