What can you say...traveling helps out sometimes. I was in the mood for some nice fluke. The east wind has turned west...FINALLY...which got those fluke on the bite. So I grabbed my brother Joe and headed out for jigging time. Using old faithful, the silver bullet...and nothing more than a teaser. We banged away on them good. Of course you do lose half but that goes withthis sort of fishing.
Nice 2.5- 3 pound fluke were the average catch for us this day...and we dropped a few pigs to boot. The weather has finally gotten to a summer pattern, thank you God! The boat had a nice crowd to fish with. Bob's boat always gets a layed back bunch. You don't have to deal with rude drunks. Bob wouldn't even deal with that routine...he runs a clean ship. The mates are there in a blink...always giving a hand and a smile to boot. Just a pleasurable day on the water.
The view fishing off of Mattituck is a jewel of Long Island. Cliffs, green and plush with old mansions. The bluefish were buzzing all over the top of the water and the Sound was full of life. Thanks to Bob for a great day in some pristine waters. What a pleasure after the last weeks' fish lockjaw from the moon and easterly winds.
FISHING TIPS:
> Silver Bullet.
When using the silver bullet, don't let it lay there. Easy short lifts, two inches up, two inches down...stop and drag always being able to feel the ball. Three up and three down and a slow slide. When you feel dead weight, slam it and you're hooked up. Check your drag always...you want it tight enough to set and loose enough so that the fish doesn't snap your line.> Lines to Use To Give You That Edge.
ProLine 15 - 20 lbs and Spiderwire 15-20 lbs. Leave the firewire in the store please...it is too stiff for this sort of fishing. ProLine and Spiderwire are limp and make it easy to feel that bite for a good hook-up. Always make sure that you have a mono leader of at least 6 feet. Never tie the ball directly to the braided line. This is a no-no...Tangle City, USA. Plus it is very visible in the water, like a fluorescent green alley cat running through a dog pound. Don't go there, not a pretty sight.Use a medium, light rod...a freshwater graphite bass rod is perfect. Rig the ball to the end of your mono filament or a fluoro carbon leader. Hey any advantages over the fish I'll take and so should you. The teaser should be a foot and a half up from the ball.
> Color for Teasers.
Pick up a different color everytime you walk into a bait store and collect as many as you can. Here are some of my favorites. Orange, blue and black. When you can find pink, grab them big time. Red can be deadlly at times and of course, white and fluorescent green. The baits change in the water so the fish will feed on what is there. Match the hatch buddy, so you will be on them while others stare at you sort of funny...like a deer in headlights.Fluke fishing can be easy as pie but sometimes you have to put a little work to produce a good catch of fish.
> Bait.
Don't go crazy please. I see people all the time with piles of bait on their hook...like their making a sandwich at the 2nd Avenue Deli. Overkill at best and sloppy as all hell, bait spinning around like a helicopter, makes for a nice line twist. Think clean and neat, spend a minute. Fresh fluke strips two inces wide, when using the silver bullets, not 6 inches. We're jigging here boys and girls. When you grab a strip, split the end like a tail. the strip will get more of a natural movement in the water. When a fish grabs the bait as you are jigging and the bait is too long, she is grabbing the tail four inches from the hook. Translation, you are hooking air...that's all. If it's short, the bite that you feel is on the hook, so set it good. On the teasers just put it through the eyes so your bait flows stream line in the water, not doing cartwheels...bad new little dude.
> Hooks.
The bad news is the teaser hooks on the silver bullets in the stores are not exactly top quality hook half the time. After you catch a few fish, they lose their sharp edge. Translation...dull hooks means less fish and a possibility of loosing that 10 lb. doormat you've been dreaming about. Bummer! Buy a cheap hook filer, a couple of quick swipes and you're in like Flynn. A little trick is to cast into the current with this rig because if you can there's nothing to tangle like a normal bait rig.> Weight and Tide.
The harder the tide the heavier the ball. So have a selection from 6 ounces down. Just keep it clean and workable. Stay on top of the fish, not a county mile behind him. When the tide is screaming this is when a conventional reel is in bad need. Keep the drag open with your thumb on the line. Always keep in contact with your rig on the bottom. So you're in control of your fishing. If you get tired and sloppy sit down and have lunch. Relax, let the fluke zen run through you. Be one with the fluke and yes, oh zen fluke master, I see him now...Yoda, may the fluke force be with you oh fluke master. Fluke, say it slowly, fluke...Doormat!
