"Keeper Fluke"Capt. Lou - Freeport
June 27, 2001
This has been a sea saw season of hots and colds. The weather has been all but consistent and the fish have been on strike, coming out here and there. But Glory Hallelujah a nicey-nice body of fluke has moved in to the waters outside of Jones Beach Inlet....where catching a two pounder is no big deal right now.
I was on the full day trip on the Captain Lou, the Captain had to move around a bit to get us on some nice bodies of fish. They're still not jumping on the hook...you have to finesse these fish by slowing down your presentation. Meat strips are definitely needed for the larger fish and when you feel the hit let him eat, let the line run through your fingers with an open spool. Give him that three Mississippi count and then set the hook well. Stop that rod pumping garbage, it doesn't work. The rod bouncing up and down gives slack on the down, letting your table fair get away from the dinner table. Bad Boo-Boo! Yogi Bear on the other hand keeps the rod high never letting the rod down keeping the line pressure on the fish reeling the fish in on a steady retrieve.
Pink is the color for teasers and for all the hooks. Hot pink. Change your bait please...I can't stand watching people fish with the same bait for two hours. Would you eat a steak that was green or a steak medium rare with that fresh red inside this is a no brainer. Keep the spool open when you hit the bottom using your thumb on the spool as the drag to let back the line when they hit. Let it slide out by easing the pressure on your thumb. Don't waste a good sea robin, the white under belly makes for good meat strips. Fresh bait is alway the ticket.
Leave the heavy rods at home thank you very much. A seven foot freshwater graphite bass rod is perfect and twenty pound test is all you need. preferably 20 pound Pro-line is the best ticket. Gamakatsu octopus hooks are great also really holds the fish on .
Enough of my babble...Go fish now...or forever hold your loose lips that I didn't give you a hot tip. Plus it's to dang hot out there to stay home. Get the kids out now. Don't forget the ice cream! And don't forget to tell me how you did...if you have any new dog trick..send them in.
