528 Lb. World's Record Blue Shark
Caught off Montauk

August 9, 2001

The world's record blue shark was caught Thursday by Joe Siedel from Bayside, Queens, on the "Half Back" of Star Island Yacht Club. It weighed in at 528 pounds and took 2 1/2 hours to reel in. The first mate said that getting the shark on board was like moving the stones of the pyramid, it took all eight men to drag him on the boat.

They all worked together in a summer camp in South Hampton. Along with Joe, the other fishermen on board were Gary Denile from England, Liam Woodford a farmer from Whales, Jim McKeil from Upstate New York and Paul from Scottland. The first mate was Adam from the Bronx.

Just a regular bunch of guys who decided to go shark fishing over a few beers. Never expecting to have the experience of a lifetime...to catch a world record blue shark, destroying the recod by 70 pounds. They were not tackle heads, just real people without the egos and hoopla...with a Captain who was just putting a day in of charter work.

I wish I could have seen his face when the shark came into view. I bet the lines of "Jaws" came in to his mind...Wait until the taxidermist gets a hold of this, he's going to have a heart attack!
