"Relief from the City"
Jamaica - Brielle, New Jersey
September 19-20 , 2001

Life has not been the norm in downtown NYC. For a few days there, I couldn't have gotten on to a boat, even if I wanted to... bridges closed... tunnels closed... living in a war zone. F16 flying over head and sirens blaring all day long. It's been a week now and I had to get back in the groove, so off to Brielle I went to go tuna fishing on the Jamaica.
Fishing has been slow, I won't lie...and I really couldn't have cared...I just needed to get back on the ocean and away from the insanity...clearing my head for whatever else is coming our way. Thank God for fishing. Fishing is good for the soul, it's a break for the heart.
The previous day some nice bluefin to 100 pounds came up. They got their limit of 20 fish and went out to the canyon for some yellow fin. It was the best shot at fish that I've heard in a while. The ship went gliding through the seas and it was so quiet. Just the sound of the boat and the ocean. Fishing has always been a pleasure throughout troubled times...as it is now. Don't sit and stare out that window all day and get between your ears with the committee talking up a storm in your head. Get back into life...grab a friend, a brother and get some fresh air.
Tuna fishing has been hit and miss, but the bluefin tuna new limit of 20 fish for each party boat has really been a saving grace. I got myself a nice bruiser and a few more came over. Tough fishing, but it should improve. Tuna are a fast moving fish. So one day to the next can change around everything.
The mates were great help and Captain Bogan worked hard to get what we got. Yours truly slept like a baby down below on the ride back. The sweet slow rock of the boat put me into a coma.
Hang in there people, these are strange days at best. Support our local fishing boats, go fishing and take a break. It will all be there when you get back.
Live life...God bless all.
