"Night of the Albacore"
Explorer

Fishing trips are what you make of them: plain and simple. The seas were calm, too calm for my liking, with an easy breeze blowing over. A light jacket and you were good to go.

These tuna wanted the almighty "jigs". Bait could not phase them in the least. Over 22 abacore were jigged up in a heart beat. And that was only by a few that had the right gear to do so. If 10 more customers were jigging, these numbers would have been doubled easily.
Also, the yellow fin that were hooked were also on jiggs. So go figure. Match the batch. Fishing is all about switching up to what the fish are, plain and simple.
John's last trip out, he had some real nice yellow fin in the 120 pounds range on chunks, but once again, the jiggers out fish all others. The Viking is sold out and there are the Brooklyn and the Explorer in Sheepshead Bay. Also Captain Lou has tuna trips on Mondays in Freeport or the Jamaica out of Brille, New Jersey, has openings. So don't sweat it.
The tuna fishing hasn't even broke open yet. And I will lay some cash on this weekend for things to really heat up. If Mother Nature behaves herself, it looks pretty good.
