"Canyon Is On"
Explorer

The Explorer really hit gold. But that was not the story for the beginning of the trip. The fishermen went through the entire night without one run off. The whole fleet was batting zero. I asked what time it was, and when they told me 6 AM, I was pretty sure we were going home with long faces. As soon as the sun peaked over the horizon, three rods screamed off line, the bite was on! Over 20 fish came in that bit on jigs, by 10 o' clock the fish had turned off as quick as they were on. John went for one last shot at fish in deeper waters off the canyon wall off a drift. I thought this will be quick nothing and a ride home. How wrong I was; we had three fish on in five minutes, and we had tuna all over the place. When I went to the top deck you could see they had all come to the surface, buzz-sawing off the chum. It was an incredible an sight for the water was so clear. I ran down and had put a 10 foot 60 pound floro carbon leader on and no weight. Threw it in and watched my bait get picked right up.

Captain John got into a little fun and dropped right next to me. We laughed as we saw a 50-pound albacore come right to the surface and inhale his bait. I had pulled three fish in, in 45 minutes and dropped one. The canyon was like a lake and the fish bit their heads off. We ended up with over 50 fish, not too shabby. I think it will get even hotter on the next few days coming up, so jump on and get a few rod breakers on.![]()
