"Indian Summer Flounder"
Captain Mike - Howard Beach
October , 2001

Flounders...are you kidding. I got to Captain Mike's especially early that morning, because of the way traffic has been. Mike got there on time, scratched his head, looked up at the sky and shuffled his feet a wee bit. He turned around and said, "we're going flounder fishing today, not black fishing." I thought to myself, it's a bit warm for that, isn't it? I had all the wrong gear for Mr. Flounder. It was a gorgeous day, the skies as blue as she gets...and that is usually a very bad scenario.

Mike had his secret spots and off we went. We anchored up in some shallow water, lit a cig and no sooner than I took a drag when up came Mr. Flatty. Not fluke, Mr. Flounder to you buddy. Up came another and another...we were fall flounder hunting wabbits! And these were some nice fatties too. Definitely a change of pace and a lot of fun, as we screamed for everyone that came up.

I got donuts. I checked my hooks, my bait..I've been doing too much tuna fishing...no finesse. I came up with a pair of lips...I think maybe I'm pulling too hard. Do you think that the tuna harness was a little overkill? Hey with 80 lb. test it was hard to feel the bite...oh nuts!

Over 20 nice flatties came up close to 3 lbs. We lost a few run offs and blew up a reel or two. Tony (the first mate and cool dude) was great as always and Mike makes for a great day as always. If Mike is not captain that day, you will find him at the Yankee game screaming and yelling.

Get your flatty hat on, we're flounder fishing!
