"Opening Day-Flounder Season"
Captain Mike-March 2002

Let's just dust off those rods that have been stored away for the winter months for most of you. And bless your lucky stars that weather-wise, Irish eyes were smiling down at you crazy fishermen. That morning, not a drop of wind and 54 degrees to boot. Heck, on opening day, I've seen every weather known to man...snow, rain and snow, 30 plus gale winds, frozen bays, you name it. 54 degrees, spare me little doggies.

So everybody came out and it was great to see all of you cartoons. The jokes flew around for free, and the bets were laid down. Right of the first drift, Mike had it made. We picked up four nice flounders, one close to three pounds. The next drift, we smacked a few more.

But the wind had changed, Capt. Mike got mugged by other boats and the fish turned off. So Mike hit every spot he knew and we picked at them.

For Mike's regulars had expected nothing more for opening day. It's the first day and we got to christen the boat for the year. Pay your dues fishermen, it only gets better from here on. Mike will find those little critters' new hangout and as the water warms a bit, numbers will climb. As for the crowd, great bunch. Tony did a great job as always keeping everything going smoothly. The flounders are here and I expect Jamaica Bay and Raritain Bay to really open up as the days go on.
