"Perfect Days "
Cape Hatteras - June, 2002

Fishermen all pray for the perfect day, 30 miles out in glass not a ripple on the ocean. The ocean is so gin clear you can flip a quarter into her and watch it flash down to 60 feet. The perfect day on the Good Times with Capt. Andy Piland and the ScreamingReel crew...Mike, Tom, your's truly and Mr. Cameraman had the dorado trip of a lifetime.

We had planned this trip for weeks and all the planning in the world doesn't mean squat when it comes to fishing. The one who has the last say on it is mother nature. What cards is she going to lay on the table is what you are going to be fishing in or not. She graced us with calm seas and clear perfect conditions. The captain had a call from another captain to move quickly into the slick where they were tearing up those square heads. The captains of Cape Hatteras all work with each other, unlike some other harbors where every captain is out for himself. I really appreciate seeing that once and a while. Especially out in the open ocean where a little help can go a long way, because that favor will be passed to the next captain and so on and so on. Good Karma!

The Captain's laid back attitude and good nature made it a real holiday. We got on those fish and had a blast. All different sizes in the endless school. From bulls to mediums...and all hungry. I wish I had my saltwater fly rod with me. I am no great fly fisherman, but these fish would have hit anything. They'd make me look like a pro! Tommy Gunn just tore it up. He had the mother dorado over 30 lbs....sweet, real sweet. Mike Spags couldn't keep the fish off. Mike just smiled ear to ear and went to town. Pictures don't lie (just fishermen!). Don't have a picture...go tell a tale as long as you want! We've got the proof in the pudding. We limited out in no time. The captain and mate were a total pleasure. I highly recommend the boat for the pure pleasure. A day I will not forget and the second day was no different...except that we forgot our dang lunch! Mike blamed me, I blamed Mike and Tommy blamed us both. Thank God for that jar of peanut butter and loaf of bread!

Special thanks to Captain Andy Piland for a diamond day of fishing.
