Viking Starship - Montauk
(Part I)
Captain Steve
Thursday & Friday, September 4 & 5, 1997

Well, the time has come and Mr. Tuna is here and kicking...but yours truly went on the first two day tuna trip on the Viking mother ship, and had a blast! Big mama tuna...leave the kids home, unless they want to go water skiing while holding onto an 80 pound yellow fin. The fishing started off real slow when we got there, but by 4 PM when the sun was setting, the bite was under way. The first six tuna blew up the lines...we thought that we had spooked them for good. But as one of the lines was screaming and peeling off a Penn International, this big mama was played perfectly and on came a 100+ pound tuna. The ice was broken!

Then yours truly pulled up a nice 80 pound beauty. The night went on...a pick here and a pick there. The squid were as thick as pea soup. So we took out light rods and started plugging away on some nice squid for live bait. Mr. Tuna or Mr. Swordfish cannot turn down a fresh squid! We plunked them into a large barrel with the sea hose in it to keep them alive and kicking. Then came the hour for dinner...3 AM...the blitz I live for. Yes, the chinese fire drill! Or is it the bull in a china closet!

Part 2, tomorrow night...
