Capt. Lou VI - Freeport

Capt. Smitty
Tuesday, November 11, 1997

Full day of sea bass and black fishing...this was a tossed salad mix. We caught everything...blues to 12 lbs...blackfish to 6 lbs. and a mess of sea bass. Winter has been showing it's face around lately...blowing her horn. I had on my snow suit for the first time this year...heavy-duty, wool army socks and don't forget a good pair of long johns. When fishing in the cold, there is no reason to freeze!

Come on girls and boys, get a grip, dress right and enjoy the day. Be toasty warm and loose. Starting from scratch:
1. Long johns tops and bottoms.
2. Thick, long, wool socks.
3. Layers...long sleeved lumberjack shirt and your favorite fishing pants.
4. Snowsuits...there are hundreds out there from $50 and up. Don't go yuppy on me now...remember we're fishing here...they are going to get slimed, so get something you can wash and you don't have to worry about.
5. Let's talk gloves...don't go cheap here, these are our main tools...frost bite is no fun. Cut off the trigger finger of your glove, so that you can feel your hit.
6. Now let's talk hats...get funky...it's time for the Elmer Fudd hat, something that covers your entire head and your chin. Style has no room here. Listen, some days a face mask is tops when it's howling out there.
Now you'll be ready for anything! And most importantly, you will be able to enjoy your day of fishing! Now that I have just given you a lecture from Mom...let's get back to the trip.

Captain Smitty was dealing with some heavy winds and anchored over the spots in the 17 fathoms as good as the best. Fishing was a blast, with alot of action. Fall fishing at it's best! Lou is a great boat to bring your kids on. But I have one last word of wisdom, (like if you go sky diving, be sure to pull the cord, it's only advise) give your loved ones, the little people, some dramamine or your choice of seasick medication. Give it to them 3 hours before you bring them on board, so that their bodies can adjust to the chemical. It will help them to enjoy their day of fishing, otherwise, seasickness can be a real drag on a child...and there is no need for it anymore. This advise comes from a father who has learned the hard way! I love children's smiling faces...let's keep it that way!

So, to conclude this story, here is just some of the fish count...Paul Kaplan with blackfish up to 3 1/2 lbs and bluefish up to 10 lbs...John Lodise the pool winner with a 5 lb. blackfish....and yours truly with 20 sea bass. Paul Smith, the new mate, did a great job.
