Captain Bob's Fleet - Mattituck

Thursday, May 14, 1998

After the 12 days of rain and four day s of a North Eastern with howling winds, everybody and their grandmother needed to get out of the house and enjoy some good fishing. Well on Thursday God smiled on the fishermen on Captain Bob's boat. St. Peter was doing the jig on this day...and blessed these fishermen with door mats...or what I call "barn doors". The water was turned up pretty badly after the storm...but these little buggers were hungry and Bob had his spot. He kept everyone awake and charged on their rods.

I was right next to the man who got a 9 lb. doormat and he played him perfect a nice steady pull, no bouncing the rod up and down. The mates help to guide him in like a pro. The boat was full of excitement and yours truly was jumping up and down. The next thing you know somebody else is yelling "I got a monster on, get the net". Well, this went on until the tide slowly died out.

But all was not done. Off in the horizon the birds were going crazy...over an acre of blues. Bob said anyone in the mood for a few blues, until the tide switched over and all the boys said "Go for it". 15 minutes later we were slamming the blues...it doesn't get better than this. Oh yes, did I say that all of this happened under sunny skies with no coats, for a change. We all got our load of blues and back we went again for a few more doormats. What a day!

One large fish does not make a boat...but consistent catches by the Captain is what makes a boat special. Bob has that talent with a great crew including his daugher...way to go Bob! My hot pick for North Fork is Bob from Mattituck. Go quickly, in the next few weeks I plan to hear double digits and you may be the person to bust the record!

Some of the count went like this...Theo Wilson from Brooklyn was the pool winner with a 9 lb. barn door...Tommy McNinney from Islip with 2 fish to 5 lbs...and Michael Collins from Comack with 3rd place an 8 1/2 pounder...over a hundred fish...a #10 day.
