The Viking Long Range Trip - Montauk
Part I
Monday - Thursday, May 18 - 21, 1998

How do you start...the weather was plain and simple...INCREDIBLE. There was a light west wind, the moon was on it's last quarter, easy currents...no screaming lines across the bottom. All my fishing cronies were there, when I got there...and a few first timers to this adventure, 3 guys who had flown in from South Dakota, just for this trip. The boat left at 7:30 PM everyone got there early and was set up and ready to go. Everyone got reaquainted and caught up with what was going on...yadda, yadda, yadda...and off we went.

We got to Steve's spot...I can't exactly tell you where...it was on a canyon wall, north...no south...no....? But I can tell you that we were on those tile big time. It's a long way down...400 - 600 feet. Spider wire or dacron was the way to go. You need to feel the hit or it's bye-bye for Bonzo! Circle hooks can work against you some times. The way these fish hit it would slide right out and that could be a drag, especially since you have to reel all that line up and rebait.

Steve, the Captain promptly proved his point after I changed my hooks to Gamakatsu regular hooks that Carl gave me. As soon as I changed the hooks I was onto tile fish. Many thanks to Steve and Carl!
