The Viking Long Range Trip - Montauk
Part II
Monday - Thursday, May 18 - 21, 1998

We caught husk, cod, hake and tile on the canyon walls. This went on all day. I lost total count. It took the crew over six hours to fillet all the fish from the first day over 200 fish for 17 people. And we still had two more days. Not one unsatisfied face.

Tired and hungry...the cook, Linda, made a big home cooked meal that was enormous with all the trimmings. After that stuffing...people were falling like flies all over. The following day we hit a few more tile and a mixed bag and then we were off north to "shallow" waters. Shallow is 200-300 feet...thank you God!

It was glass out there...cool, clear days...65 degrees perfect..absolutely perfect. We'd hit a little wreck and all the rods were doubled over. I was doing my cod shimmy dance and banging them. Carl next to me was getting me angry... I'd get a 10 lb. cod, he'd get a 20 lb. cod...I'd get a 15 pounder, he'd get a 30 pounder. I knew where he slept...not that I'd put a wolf fish in his sleeping bag...oh no, not me! Steve was doing a bang up job. Look guys I'm sorry if this sounds too good to be true, but it was fantastic!

Wolf fish can be nasty looking dudes...not someone your mother would approve of! Fishing in warm weather is a pleasure, no snow suits, no frost bitten fingers...just a light sweater. I can tell you we had a great crowd...the boys form South Dakota did a slamming job. The second day we had every kind of northern fish you can get, except for halibut. Monk fish are sure funky looking... not something you grab by the lip. The mouth on a monk fish could swallow a basketball!
