Nancy Ann - Orient Point
Friday, June 26, 1998
Well, here is a change of pace. I went fishing with Al Goldberg on the hottest day of the year...over 100 degrees. You could fry an egg on a Cadillac. The long drive out to Orient at around 3:45 AM and it's 85 degrees...give me a break! Time for shorts and blast the air conditioning. The Long Island Highway patrolmen were out in force. There was going to be no rush here. Put on some old tunes and cruise with all the windows open...and just slooooooow down. The days are long...by 4:50 AM the sky was already shouting with the summers' early light. The North Fork drive is beautiful...vineyards and hanging trees over the road. Old Long Island houses and big open fields flush green from all the rain we've had. No drought this year. The city's banging and clashing was replaced by the sounds of the birds and the wind blowing through the trees. No one was up yet, no confusion, no rush. Just going fishing with a friend and maybe make some new ones. Stop for another cup of coffee and drive on down. The wind gave much relief from the summers smoldering heat.

The Nancy Ann was a nice open boat with plenty of room to fish...no crowding, no competing for space in tight quarters. A beautiful wood boat in immaculate shape and very clean. We loaded up and drove over to the Gut and anchored up for some bass. No four hundred boats out here...we were alone watching some ferries going across.
We had a young boy on board, Kevin, who was fishing with his father...eyes all fresh and charged to fish. Yours truly has been on the road a bit and was happy just to be in great surroundings...camera away.

Kevin was hooked up to a nice bass that weighed about 24 pounds and started off the trip. I, on the other hand lost a fish. Well that's all for the bass...we were going fluking. With two big sharpies...Laurie, a past writer for the Long Island Fisherman who has been working on a record...and Al Goldberg with his primo handmade custom rods. Yours truly had his ugly stick and high speed Penn...one of these days I'm going to get my gear together in some sort of order. Using the silver bullet with Al during certain tide periods was a lot of fun...you get a lot of action.

All in all it was a good day. Full of good talk, good people, a great Captain and the ocean was behaving herself for a change. Summer is a time that flies by faster than one likes to think...so get some friends together and make some new memories...and some new stories...the old ones are wearing thin! Grab that old rod and change the line and get out...it's time...maybe we'll meet and catch a few together. Dave
